Cubitts to open store in Cambridge

Lauretta Roberts
01 January 1970

Spectacle makers Cubitts is opening a new store in Cambridge in early June, and will be launching three exclusive frames inspired by the unique history of Cambridge and its residents.

It will be Cubitts second store outside of London, where it has nine stores in various locations including Soho, St James’s, Spitafields, Notting Hill and Covent Garden, adding to the store it opened in Brighton in 2020.

Located at 18 Trinity Street, in the heart of Cambridge’s original medieval high street, the Grade II listed 18th century building has been remodelled to celebrate art and culture in Cambridge over the past century.

The original house was designed by architect Raymond McGrath for historian and Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge, Mansfield Forbes, “in the modern style”, and it became an “exhibition piece cum arts centre” for creatives in the late 1920’s, utilising the latest materials and modern technology.

Objects in the new store will include a vase made by Orrefors, the Swedish manufacturers favoured by McGrath and Forbes in the 1930’s.

The three new frame silhouettes include a shape worn by Tommy Flowers, an English engineer and member of the code breakers at Bletchley Park, who was also the mind behind Colossus, the world’s first programmable computer.
