Cubitts opens new Leeds store

Spectacle maker Cubitts has this week opened a new store in Victoria Arcade in Leeds, the brand’s third store outside of London and its first in the north of England, having opened in Cambridge in June 2021 and Brighton in 2020.

In line with Cubitts design philosophy, the new store features an exclusive micro-collection of three frames inspired by the city’s most revered artists, designers and architects.

Tom Broughton, Founder and CEO of Cubitts, said: “We've been searching for our perfect site in Leeds since 2016. So, five years on, and after a tumultuous two years, it is an honour to be opening our doors within the beautiful faience tile clad County Arcade.

“Each of our Cubitts stores take influence from their local environment, bringing in elements of art, design, architecture and literature. Our new store in Leeds is no different. We've drawn on the rich cultural tapestry of the city over the past century as well as Frank Matcham's magnificent marbles and mosaics. The new opening gives us the chance to work with some of the city's most brilliant brands, and hopefully make our contribution to Leeds' exciting future.”

Designed by Alexy Kos and Che Huang of London-based Child Studio, the new store draws influence from early 20th century retail spaces. The floor patterns take influence from 1940’s design Céramique De La Lys, using colour accents and abstract geometric patterns. The store also uses warm, muted colour tones throughout such as pink and green, showcased in marble and terrazzo tiles.

In partnership with independent Leeds brewer Northern Monk, a one-of-a-kind Cubitts beer has been created to celebrate the launch, and will be sold online. To minimise waste materials where possible, the leftover grain from the unique beer collaboration will be used to create a bespoke pair of spectacles which will be displayed in the Leeds store.

Additionally, in keeping with the Leeds-centric theme, Village Books, a store which represents Leeds’ rich art scene, is also curating a collection of literature that celebrates the city, which will be available to view in the Leeds store. The ongoing partnership between Village Books and Cubitts will see a collection of coffee table books and magazines being updated each quarter, to provide fresh inspiration for customers waiting for an eye test.

Local ethical roastery North Star Coffee will also provide complimentary speciality grade coffee to customers in store.
