The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers has revealed the winners of its National Footwear Student of the Year Awards 2020.

In a statement, Cordwainers said that the awards team, students and judges all worked remotely, “taking advantage of digital technology to ensure that the students can still benefit from this career-defining event”.

Footwear design students from De Montfort University, the University of Northampton and the London College of Fashion were asked to design “an innovative and marketable shoe” and submit their portfolio digitally.

The Master of the Company, Nigel Easton, explained: “The Cordwainers National Footwear Student of the Year Awards are the embodiment of the Company’s core purpose, demonstrating the Company’s commitment to supporting both the footwear industry and student footwear designers.

This year’s prize fund is almost £12,000, including a £5,000 prize for the winner.

The first place prize was awarded to Clara Nordenhok a student at London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London.

The second place prize went to Ellie Gray of De Montfort University, and third place to Jiwon Joung, also from De Montfort University.

Katie Greenyer, Chair of the judging panel and Creative Director of Pentland Brands, in an address to the students, said: “What incredible work. We thoroughly enjoyed going through all your submissions.

"This is a time when students need to be even more determined and resourceful, whether it’s exploring and joining discussions online or entering our competition. In such difficult circumstances, you delivered."

The Cordwainers’ Company added that it is hoping to mark the achievements of the talented students with an awards ceremony in the autumn, which will bring together some of the finest names in British footwear.

The judging panel included Michael Atmore, Editorial Director of Footwear News; Footwear Designer Charlotte Olympia Dellal; Katie Greenyer, Creative Director at Pentland Brands;  Footwear and Accessories Designer Beatrix Ong; and Joachim Sedelmeier, Head of Shoe Design at Paul Smith.
