Copenhagen Fashion Week announces fur ban

Copenhagen Fashion Week has joined Amsterdam, Helsinki and Oslo Fashion Week and banned fur at its shows.

The news follows the fashion industry's gradual transition from real fur to fake fur, with concerns often raised regarding animal welfare, waste management and sustainable practices.

Mimi Bekhechi, PETA Vice President for Europe said: "PETA and compassionate fashionistas everywhere are celebrating the news that Copenhagen Fashion Week will go fur-free. The event will now join the fashion weeks of Amsterdam, Helsinki, Oslo, and others as well as brands like Gucci, Versace, Prada, Valentino, Armani, Chanel, and just about every other major fashion brand that has already banned animal fur.

"This move follows a consumer awakening brought about by PETA supporters internationally, who piled on the pressure, pointing out that Danish “high-welfare” fur is a cruel and unsustainable scam. Today, fur is as dead as the animals it was stolen from, and designers around the globe are embracing sustainable, innovative vegan fabrics. Milan and Paris fashion weeks must now follow suit."

This year, Moncler announced it will remove animal fur obtained from animals specially bred or captured in the wild from all its collections after AW23, while Dolce & Gabbana said it will transition to eco-friendly faux fur in all its collections.

The growing international list of brands who have committed to exclude real fur from their collection also includes Armani, Gucci, Prada, Yoox Net-a-Porter.

Italy has also banned fur farming in a landmark vote by the Budget Committee of the Italian Senate, following discussions with animal protection organisation Humane Society International/Europe (HSI).
