ASOS co-founder Nick Robertson had a well-rehearsed welcome address for the conveyor belt of new recruits ditching their high street careers for a leap into the realm of internet retail.
He implored them to forget about shops — these were just reconfigured market stalls, designed to sell goods to a specific customer base in a specific area. Parochial mindsets were of no use to a business intent on dominating the nascent online fashion industry.
