Christopher Raeburn hired to "reinvigorate" Stone Island founder's brands

British designer Christopher Raeburn has been hired to "reinvigorate" the Left Hand and ST95 brands originally established by Massimo Osti, the pioneering Italian designer who founded Stone Island.

UK-based Left Hand Studios Limited has acquired the two brands originally developed by Osti and plans to re-launch both in Autumn/Winter 2021. Left Hand and ST95 were formed in the mid-1990s, using the technical insights that the pioneering Osti made his own with Stone Island and C.P. Company.

They will now be led creatively by Raeburn, who is a pioneer in his own right through his use of sustainable fabrics and production methods. The brands will be based at the RÆBURN Lab in East London.

Left Hand was the first brand Osti developed following his creation of Stone Island and C.P. Company and was launched in 1993. With a focus on newly developed materials, Left Hand coupled Osti’s forward-thinking design skills and passion for innovation. The new collection for Autumn/Winter 2021 will feature jackets, liners and jersey, "all in keeping with the brand’s original aesthetic yet evolved for the fashion landscape of today".

ST95 originally launched in 1995 and was known for its sporty appeal, focusing on a younger audience than Left Hand. For Autumn/Winter 2021, ST95 is being reimagined with a still youthful but responsibly minded, customer in mind. The promises to be "forward-thinking with a nod to the brand’s original roots, executed in an unexpected and contemporary way".

Both collections will be showcased to a hand-picked, select number of international retailers in February 2021.

The news comes on the day it was announced that Italian luxury brand Moncler is to acquired Stone Island in a two-stage deal. Initially Moncler (which started as French luxury ski brand) will buy just over 50% of Stone Island from its owner and CEO, Carlo Rivetti, and “a further 19.9% from other members of his family.”

Last week Raeburn was recognised for his leadership in sustainable design by being made an honouree at the first Fashion Awards to be staged online-only by the British Fashion Council.
