Canada Goose to end the use of fur in "momentous step" for anti-fur movement

In a "momentous step" for the anti-fur movement, Canadian outerwear giant Canada Goose has said it will end the manufacture of products containing fur by the end of 2022.

The company, famed for its coyote fur-trimmed parkas, will cease the purchase of fur at the end of this year and stop production of garments containing fur next year.

Announcing the move, president and CEO Dani Reiss said: “Our focus has always been on making products that deliver exceptional quality, protection from the elements, and perform the way consumers need them to; this decision transforms how we will continue to do just that.

"We continue to expand – across geographies and climates – launching new categories and products designed with intention, purpose and functionality. At the same time, we are accelerating the sustainable evolution of our designs.”

Humane Society International (HSI), which has been fighting the global fur trade and is lobbying for a #FurFreeBritain, welcomed the announcement.

HSI UK executive director Claire Bass said: “This is a momentous step in the demise of cruel fur fashion. For years, Canada Goose’s trademark parka jackets with coyote fur trim have been synonymous with fur cruelty but their announcement today is another major blow to the global fur trade, a dying industry on its knees from the punches of so many top designers and retailers walking away from the PR-nightmare of fur.

"Canada Goose’s fur-free policy will spare untold thousands of coyotes from being maimed and killed in cruel metal leg-hold traps, and should strengthen the UK Government’s resolve to recognise that banning the import and sale of fur is the right thing to do, both by the public and future-focussed fashion brands.”

In recent years a stream of high profile fashion brands and designers have dropped fur, including Gucci, Chanel, Burberry, Tom Ford, Michael Kors, Versace, Diane von Furstenberg and many more.

HSI is now lobbying for all fur sales to be banned in Britain. Fur farming was outlawed in 2000 and certain furs are banned from sales such as seal skin, domestic dog and cat fur and endangered species. However, Britain still imports and sells fur from countries such as Canada, China, Finland and Italy from a range of species such as fox, rabbit, mink, coyote, raccoon dog and chinchilla.
