Bridal chain Berketex, which has been part of the British high street for 50 years, has fallen into administration and closed its 12 stores.

The chain had 11 stores in the UK and one in Dublin and all have been closed for good, following the appointment of insolvency practitioners Wilson Field.

Berketex filed a notice to appoint administrators in the High Court of justice in Manchester on Friday and in a statement Wilson Field said: “The director of the company wishes to express his sincere apologies for the abrupt closure of the store and any subsequent inconvenience this may cause to customers of the company.

“Wilson Field Limited appreciate that this will be distressing for the customers of the company and will deal with individual queries as quickly as possible however we anticipate a high volume of calls and therefore ask for your patience in advance.”

Some brides to be have reported that they received calls telling them they could pick up their dresses if they paid the balance up front, while others are waiting to hear if they will receive their dresses. As well as bridalwear, Berketex sold occasionwear and accessories.

Berketex is likely to have felt the effects of the rise in the affordable bridalwear market, which has seen brands from Topshop to H&M and ASOS all offering on-trend affordable wedding dresses. Equally more reasonably priced premium brands such as Self Portrait and Needle & Thread are offering accessibly priced contemporary options.
