Boohoo Group has launched a new community programme entitled Be You, aiming to empower 14 to 16-year-olds with knowledge about the fundamentals of data science.

To mark the start of this ongoing commitment, the Group has collaborated with EVERFI, a leading provider of social impact education, to deliver the introduction of a mobile-first education resource to help young people build their understanding of data skills.

The strategic partnership will be rolled out in 40 secondary schools across Manchester, London, Burnley, Wellingborough, and Daventry, with a particular focus on reaching young people from underrepresented communities.

The course, Data Science Foundations, provides a “bootcamp” designed to empower young people with the foundational knowledge needed to understand its relevance in the job market and applicability to everyday life.

Created in partnership with teachers and subject matter experts, the course offers a library of learning topics around data science including lessons on data science basics; collecting, cleaning, and validating data; analysing and visualising data; and reporting and acting on data.

John Lyttle, Boohoo Group CEO, said: "All of the evidence shows that children have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic and we want to play our part in bridging that gap by helping young people to fulfil their potential. That’s why we are delighted to announce our first-ever education strategic partnership with EVERFI which will enable us to offer support to some of the schools in and around the areas where we have a physical presence. Supporting an introduction to data science is just one small part of encouraging the next generation in their understanding of an ever-evolving digital jobs market."

Nick Fuller MBE, EVERFI President (International), added: "We are excited to work with the boohoo group. The time is right to inspire and support students to pursue data-driven careers - not only to address a significant gap in the talent pipeline but also to ensure young people's success in an increasingly tech-driven world. This programme demonstrates EVERFI’s commitment - and that of boohoo group, our strategic partner - to helping students to gain an understanding of data science and to build their confidence in this critical area."
