Bond Street lights up London with a tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II

The highly anticipated unveiling of Bond Street’s twinkling Christmas lights this year pays a warm-hearted tribute to the late HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Bond Street, home to a wealth of elegant flagship stores and exclusive brands, marked the start of the festive season with the reveal of its spectacular lighting display.

The new lighting design was inspired by the crown jewels and the famous jewellery houses that have made Bond Street their home for centuries. It replaced the much-loved peacock feathers, which starred in the festive display for the past eight years.

Concept planning for the new lights commenced in early 2021, celebrating the Platinum Jubilee and England’s longest-serving monarch, HM Queen Elizabeth II.

When the shopping street was established in 1686, Royal patronage played a key role in drawing in the greatest merchants and master artisans. Today, the street's connection to the Royal family is as prevalent as ever, boasting more Royal Warrants than any other area in the UK.

The magnificent new scheme of over 93,652 LED lights features four crowns, inspired by the Imperial State Crown, which are visible at each of the key junctions on Bond Street. The crossings echo the shape of shimmering necklaces that are ‘strung’ across Old and New Bond Street, reminiscent of the pieces in the collections of renowned jewellers on the street.

The design was created with sustainability at its core. Each LED structure and decoration was made of reusable, long-life materials, prepared for outdoor conditions. This includes recycled polymer reformed to create the ‘pearls’, as well as recycled aluminium to create the structure.

In addition, the hours of illumination have been reduced amid the energy crisis, resulting in an efficiency saving of an overwhelming 75%.

Katie Thomas, Associate Director of Bond Street & Mayfair, commented: “Bond Street is one of the most recognised shopping streets in the world, it is the global centre for luxury so our new lights scheme needed to reflect this, and how better than by taking inspiration from the resplendent Crown Jewels.

"The Christmas lights have been over a year in the making and feature four dazzling crowns, two magnificent gateways and over 216 translucent pearl globes. Visitors come from all over the world to see our lights, and catch a glimpse of the magical window displays created by the famous flagship stores that call Bond Street their home.”

The Christmas lights follow many respectful tributes from retailers and businesses across London after her death earlier this year.
