Boden removes sequins and glitter from its collection to protect the ocean

UK-based fashion brand Boden has announced that it will remove all sequins and glitter from its collection in a move to protect the oceans.

It is the first major retailer to take the step although others are expected to follow suit in finding more eco-conscious alternatives, according to a report by The Times.

Boden explained the move by saying that on average 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans every year, adding that its designers were finding more creative ways to still add "wow" to the collection through bold appliqués, embroidery and some brand-new 3D techniques.

The kind of sequins used in fashion are petroleum-based plastics such as PVCs that contain toxic chemicals.

Last year retailers Morrisons, Waitrose and John Lewis met phased-out glitter from Christmas products, stating concerns over the damage of microplastics on the environment.
