Ben Sherman relaunches tailoring for first time since pre-pandemic
Ben Sherman has re-entered the world of sharp tailoring for SS25, for the first time since 2019 - just before the pandemic struck in spring 2020 - attributing the move to a "resurgence of dressed-up style".
Tailoring naturally fell off the radar during the pandemic, with the nation stuck at home in comfy joggers, but Ben Sherman’s Creative Director, Mark Williams, believes now is the right time to step back in to the formalwear fold.
He said: "Ben Sherman has a long-standing history in British tailoring, with suiting playing an integral role in past seasonal collections. Like many, the brand saw a shift away from formalwear during the pandemic, which naturally impacted demand.
"With the resurgence of dressed-up style and strong momentum across our UK website, our new London and Brighton stores and national retail partners like John Lewis, the time was right to reintroduce tailoring. This new collection is a confident return, rooted in our heritage and designed to meet the evolving style preferences of our customer."
Going against the more relaxed fit tailoring trend that’s currently prominent, Ben Sherman has decided to stick to its Mod roots with its slim ‘Soho Fit Suit’ – coming with a two-button jacket as opposed to original three button Mod styles.
Williams added: "Ben Sherman’s approach to tailoring has always been grounded in our brand’s heritage. While wider silhouettes and relaxed fits are undoubtedly trending across the industry, we believe it's equally important to offer styles that reflect what our customers continue to seek. Our consumer gravitates toward a sharper, more fitted silhouette - something that’s been central to the Ben Sherman identity for decades.
"The slim-fit featured throughout this collection is a modern interpretation of the clean, structured tailoring worn by the Mods, style pioneers whose influence remains deeply embedded in British menswear.
"With the Soho Fit Suit, we took inspiration from the sharp modernists of 1960s Soho, reimagining their confident, dressed-up energy with fabrications like linen blends and lightweight wool twill.
"The result is a collection designed to be both versatile and enduring, tailoring that speaks to Ben Sherman’s roots while staying relevant to today’s customer."
Perhaps much better known for its button-down shirts, which originally rose to prominence as part of the uniform of early 1960s and late 70s Mods and skinheads, Ben Sherman is also currently featuring as the lead sponsor of Brighton Museum & Art Gallery’s new exhibition, ‘The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1955-66’.
Brighton was the birthplace of Ben Sherman in 1963, and the brand has its own separate installation within the space under the title of ‘The Decades’, featuring archive shirts and other key pieces from its back catalogue.
The museum is located in Royal Pavilion Gardens, Brighton, and the exhibition is on now and set to run until 4 January 2026.
