Balmain names Antonin Tron as new Creative Director
Balmain has named Antonin Tron as its new Creative Director, following the confirmed departure of Olivier Rousteing after 14 years at the French luxury house.
The acclaimed designer, known for founding his independent label Atlein in 2016, is set to present his debut collection for Balmain in March 2025. Tron will now devote himself exclusively to the house, according to WWD.
"I wish to express my gratitude to Olivier Rousteing for building Balmain into the global brand it is today," Tron said in a statement. "Balmain embodies savoir-faire, culture, sensuality, and elegance - fashion that is radiant, precise, and bold. This resonates deeply with me, and I feel privileged to build on this incredible legacy."
A graduate of Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Tron belongs to a generation of designers known for their intellectual and technical approach to design.
Before launching Atlein, Tron honed his skills at Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Balenciaga, and Saint Laurent, collaborating with creative leaders such as Nicolas Ghesquière, Alexander Wang, and Demna.
"Antonin’s design method, rooted in the art of draping and the physicality of fabric, marks a continuation of Pierre Balmain’s foundational philosophy," said Matteo Sgarbossa, Balmain’s CEO. "He will build on the house’s heritage of creativity, craftsmanship, and elegance."
Rachid Mohamed Rachid, Chairman of Balmain and CEO of its parent company Mayhoola, added: "Antonin’s thoughtful approach to design, rooted in craftsmanship and artistic sensitivity, makes him an exciting talent for the house."
The new appointment comes amid a wave of creative leadership changes across major fashion houses. Recent and upcoming debuts include Maria Grazia Chiuri at Fendi, Rachel Scott at Proenza Schouler, Jaden Smith at Christian Louboutin’s men’s division. Grace Wales Bonner is also set to take over Hermès menswear.
Approaching its 80th anniversary, Balmain finds itself navigating the balance between honouring its legacy and embracing reinvention. "Few luxury brands can bridge such a rich past with such a progressive present," Sgarbossa said. With Antonin, the house aims to fulfil the dream of Balmain - one rooted in "aspiration, connection, elegance, and meaning".
