AW20 Trends: Knit Picking

Sandra Halliday
13 March 2020

Knits were big news on the AW20 runways of London in particular and it was interesting that one of the key trends was almost a no-fashion story. Think of the classics reborn, the kind of seaters you might have worn to school in the winter or that once lingered unsold in the bargain bin of your local department store.

These are no-style styles, with simple V-necks and textural patterns left over from the good-old, bad-old days when every woman knew how to knit. Some labels keep them ultra-simple but for others, they were elevated by cut-out details or subtle embellishment.

The striped sweater made a play for AW20 stardom with cricket sweaters a big story that also related to the reborn classics trend. Elsewhere, the classic wider-striped sweater came belted or dressed up with removable details such as an embellished collar piece.

Total knit dressing was also strong as the sweater dress or knit combo continued the knit focus from New York and underscored the wider importance of knits for the season. These knits can be aything you want them to be from power coloured and chunky enough to avoid the need for a coat to ultra-fine in shimmering yarns. Knits also reflected some of the season’s dominant colour stories with earthy tones and allover white dressing key.
