AW20 Trends: Feet first

Sandra Halliday

Knee-high boots got a resounding thumbs-up from designers during AW20 fashion month as the culottes, skirts and skinny pants that designers sent down the runways meant they were the perfect accompaniment to the new looks.

So what’s new about the offer for AW20? Cut a little loose, they avoided the slouchy styles of recent seasons for a more classic smooth leather look that also relied on a chunky heel to give them just the right finishing touch. Toe shapes, meanwhile, were more varied from gently rounded to a distinct point or slightly squared-off.

Colour-wise, it was the classic that ruled including very wearable blacks, greys and browns. But the season’s love of winter whites also made an impact as pure white, cream and almost-silver put in an appearance.

Over-knee boots look set to be a carry-over for the new season too. Tory Burch really embraced them, teaming them with both skinny pants and skirts in deep-toned leathers or reflecting AW20’s love of florals with sprigs of flowers that  certainly added extra appeal (even if those sprigs are likely to mean they cost much more too).

But boots didn’t have the trend spotlight all to themselves. Platform soles were key for both evening sandals and daytime shoes, and the higher the better seems to be the message coming out of the shows. The heel shape was important too with a chunky heel that flared out towards the floor offering us the newest silhouette.
