AW20 Trends: After Dark

Sandra Halliday
24 February 2020

AW 20/21 offered plenty of inspiration for party season later this year (as well as some directions for winter bridal) with designers adding a very wearable edge to their collections.

Key for the younger market was the enthusiastic adoption of mini lengths for evening. From lace to satins, sequins and general shimmer, legs were the key focus for these dresses that felt youthful and showed fashion isn’t afraid to be sexy.

And midnight lace (either ultra fine or heavier guipures) continued as a key material for new-season evenings, in loose or fitted silhouettes. And while the look on the runways was frequently about transparency, expect these styles to come with appropriate linings once they drop in-store. As an alternative to allovers, lace should be a strong separates story at retail.

Hi-lo hems looked like a key direction for the season too and could influence the bridal market as much as the party mix. That could mean a ruffled tunic with hi-lo hem over slim-cut pants, or a a full-on red carpet gown. Meanwhile, simple short styles that young consumers can casuals via accessories bring this direction out of the fantasy world into a more real-life realm.
