AW19 colour: Our top three directions

Sandra Halliday

The AW19 shows were a feast for colour junkies with plenty of "new" colour stories to drive consumer interest, update key items and ring the changes for the coming season.

Ok, there was a lot of carryover colour too. Think allover black, allover white, indigo, rich blues, Millennial pink, purples and more. But what felt newer was the neutral mood that saw grey and beige tones taking a starring role with the latter also warming up to add a spicy edge. Head to toe grey felt surprisingly fresh and made as much of an impact on evening as more formal daywear.

But that’s not to say colour was universally understated. Quite the reverse, in fact as power brights (main image) took centre stage. Intense tomato and pillbox reds, fizzy oranges, eye-searing fuchsia, acid yellow (as well as more sunny and very un-autumnal yellows) meant that colour was frequently the key fashion statement on the runways, relegating silhouette and detail to second and third places.

And designers also continued the green moment that’s already making an impact at retail. The love of green straddled both the more muted and bright approaches to colour for the season with understated mint and military khaki coming alongside rich (but not dark) emerald tones that felt new and fresh.
