AW18 trend to go: Bustiers rule, OK!

Fashion Month saw designers ringing the changes with topwear for the new season as the bustier turned into a star item as it cropped up for all hours of the day.

Of course we saw it in its most traditional forms for (increasingly rare) grand gala gowns and the more-frequently-seen lower-key occasion and evening dresses. But much more interesting was its place as a key piece in the layering jigsaw that was so notable this time.

That layered approach saw it adapting to some surprisingly sporty daytime looks as well as evening and occasion. In technical fabrics and stretch, it was used atop dressed-down shirts, T-shirts and fine knits. And for careerwear, it worked well in tweeds as a conversation starter with a skirt or slim-cut pants.

Meanwhile, teamed with delicate sheers, or interpreted in brocades, lace or even an orgy of tinsel, it was the perfect party piece. And for casually formal summer dressing, bustier dresses also had enough newness on offer to provide compelling reasons to whip out the credit card.

But it wasn’t only about the classic bustier as the idea of layered dressing also saw bra tops and spaghetti strap tops worn over shirts, blouses and knits. The latter option may be a more commercial choice when the look hits the high street, although the faux bustier will probably make an impact too.
