Atterley, the online marketplace for fashion independents, has appointed former Nasty Gal commercial director Kelly Byrne as Chief Growth Officer.

Byrne joins the Edinburgh-based business after a decade with Nasty Gal's parent the Boohoo Group and was one of the online retail giant's earlier hires. Before taking over as taking over as commercial director of Nasty Gal in July 2018, following its acquisition by Boohoo, she held senior roles at the Boohoo brand including head of marketing operations and head of international marketing.

Atterley founder Mike Welch said of the appointment: "As one of Boohoo's early hires Kelly has developed significant experience growing profitable fashion retail brands internationally; which led her more recently to taking over the running of Nasty Gal after boohoo acquired it, where she split her time between the UK and the US. I am very excited to have her heading up the growth plans for Atterley, she’s a superstar hire for us."

In a Linked-in post, Byrne commented: "As they say, all good things must come to an end. It’s time to say a heartfelt and tearful goodbye to boohoo. Thank you to all of my amazing colleagues, mentors and especially friends who have spent the last 10 and more years supporting me in playing a part in helping build an incredible business. Now to work alongside the awesome team at Atterley.com in growing another fantastic brand to the next level and making it a household name."

Welch, a serial entrepreneur, founded Atterley in 2016, having acquired the former Atterley Road multi brand e-commerce business and transforming it into a marketplace for leading independent fashion retailers and brands. The business has enjoyed strong growth during the pandemic as consumers shifted spend online and in April of last year it secured a further £3m in a funding round led by Maven Capital Partners, which included support from existing shareholders and Scottish Enterprise.

The company said the funds would go towards expanding the business internationally with a particular focus on the US, where Byrne spent much time working on Nasty Gal, which had been founded in LA.
