ASOS stops producing paper return slips

ASOS has confirmed the implementation of its pledge, as part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, to remove paper return slips from its deliveries.

The move comes as part of ASOS's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. Every year the company is reported to send out approximately 64 million paper returns inserts, by taking returns online it will save 8,450 trees or 320,000kg of paper per year.

ASOS has provided customers with a "how to" video, detailing how the new online return service operates.

In 2019, the company signed the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy Global Commitment, which brings together businesses and governments across the world to tackle plastic waste. Since signing the commitment, ASOS have promised to increase the amount of recycled material in mailing bags, up to 100% (from 65%), increase the use of 'post-consumer waste', and half the amount of packaging currently used.

Sander Defruyt, Lead of the New Plastics Economy initiative at the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, said: “The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment unites businesses, governments and others behind a clear vision of a circular economy for plastic. We are pleased ASOS is joining us, by setting concrete 2025 targets.

This week, ASOS announced it has achieved a 30% reduction in operational carbon emissions per order since 2015/16 through its Carbon 2020 strategy, which was launched in 2015 and comes to a close this year.
