Asos sales up 22% after strong end to 2015

Asos has posted strong sales growth in the four months to 31 December, with overall retail sales up 22% at £446.9m and UK sales up 25% at £206.2m. Importantly, its international sales were strong at £240.7m, up 20% year on year.

The young fashion etailer appears to have bounced back from a tough 2014 when it was forced to issue three profit warnings while it introduced a pricing system that it enabled it to align prices to different international markets. Gross margin took a hit, however, (by about 40 basis points) due to continued investment in technology and infrastructure and continued price adjustments.

Asos also says it active customer base increased to 10.8m active users during 2015, up 18% year on year. Chief executive Nick Beighton, who took over from founder Nick Robertson who stood down last September, said Asos had achieved “record sales” during Cyber Weekend last November and has also “seen further growth in average order frequency, average basket value and number of orders.”

"We have traded well through peak and are continuing to invest in the future growth of the business. We are on track with our plans for the year as a whole," Beighton added.
