ASOS has made a "significant progression" in its global growth plan with the announcement that it is to open a new $40m fulfilment centre in the US.

The new facility will be based just outside of Atlanta, Georgia and is expected to be operational by autumn 2018. It will have the capacity for 10m units and the ability to be extended at any time, the company said.

ASOS CEO Nick Beighton said the facility would enable the young fashion etail giant offer more cost effective, fast and flexible services to its growing US customer base.

"Our US business delivered 39% constant currency growth in the first six months of the current financial year following sales of £179m in the year ended August 2016. Our US fulfilment centre will enable us to significantly develop our proposition for our 20-something US customers supporting our continued growth and future ambitions," he said.

At the moment ASOS is fulfilling around 25% of its US orders from its existing US facility. It has also been ramping up its fulfilment capabilities in Europe having built a new Eurohub 2 facility in Germany, phase one of which came online in March of this year, which doubled its stockholding capacity and quadrupled its throughput capacity. A second build phase is underway and is expected to be operational in financial year 2018.

ASOS' main UK fulfilment centre is based in Barnsley.
