Asda temporarily suspends search for new CEO

Asda has reportedly paused its search for a new Chief Executive Officer to succeed Roger Burnley, as one of its owners has become heavily involved in the running of the supermarket chain.

The company, which also owns George at Asda, was bought by the Issa brothers last year, with Mohsin Issa said to have been spending a lot of his time at the supermarket's headquarters in Leeds, according to The Times.

Asda's former CEO Roger Burnley left ahead of schedule last year after a disagreement over strategy with Asda’s new owners.

The newspaper reports that the Issa brothers still want to have a large influence in the running of the chain and it would be difficult to find a new chief executive that "would not have ultimate control of strategy".

The plans, reported by "two sources close to the process", said that the search had been delayed and the current structure would remain for now. This leaves an opportunity for the search to continue in the future.

It is understood that executives from Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons and Pets at Home have all turned down the role.
