Arcadia announces the temporary shut-down of all stores

20 March 2020

Sir Philip Green's Arcadia Group has announced the temporary shut-down of all of its stores due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus crisis.

The fashion retail group, whose brands include Topshop, Topman, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Burton, Wallis and Evans, issued a statement to say: "The health and wellbeing of our employees, customers and communities remains our highest priority and we continue to closely follow the government guidelines.

"In line with many other retailers the Group has made the difficult decision to close until further notice all of our stores from 4PM this afternoon. All store staff remain employees during this time and will be paid their normal pay for March plus any outstanding overtime payments, after which we will review this situation and will be keeping our store teams updated.

"In the meantime we will be focusing on our digital and social platforms to keep our customers engaged during this challenging time."

So far Prime Minister Boris Johnson has so far stopped short of ordering the shut-down of all non-essential retail but it is widely believed it will be the next on his list of social distancing measures as the country ups its efforts to take control of the Coronavirus crisis.

Sir Philip Green's business is the latest in a long line of retailers, including Selfridges, Liberty, Harvey Nichols, Nike, Urban Outfitters, Abercrombie & Fitch and many more, to decide to shut their stores ahead of any Government order to protect staff and customers.
