Amazon sees a decrease in fake accounts as it increases fight against counterfeit products

Online retailer Amazon has announced in its Brand Protection Report that it prevented 4 billion "bad listings" from making it onto its site in 2021, a drop from 2020 when it prevented 10 billion listings.

The report, which was released on 8 June, also noted a yearly decrease in complaints of intellectual property infringement, while the average number of active brands on the site increased.

Amazon specified that it had then removed 3 million counterfeit products from the site in 2021, up by 1 million in the year prior.

The number of fake accounts that Amazon stopped fell from 6 million to 2.5 million in 2021, a 58% drop that the business says is due to an "investment in an improved seller vetting process" and other efforts to deter counterfeit actors.

The company said that it had implemented a program last year that made it harder for wrongdoers to register to the platform and sell their products. It said that new registrations now have to speak one-to-one to a team member to verify their identity, verify their physical location and payment instruments, whilst also employing machine learning to understand risk levels of potential accounts.

The company has also said that it spent more than £718 million to prevent fraud and that it has sued or referred more than 600 sellers for investigation in the US, UK, EU, and China. This is an increase of 300% against 2020.
