Amazon has launched a new ‘Climate Pledge Friendly’ label to encourage sellers to “create sustainable products”, as part of its commitment to be net carbon neutral by 2040.

More than 25,000 products in categories across fashion, electronics, beauty, grocery and household will be awarded Amazon’s new Climate Pledge Friendly label from today.

Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos said: “With 18 external certification programs and our own Compact by Design certification, we’re incentivizing selling partners to create sustainable products that help protect the planet for future generations.”

Last year, the global online giant, faced great pressure from environmental activists as well as its employees to become more eco-conscious, in order to tackle climate change. Amazon delivers almost 10 billion items a year and has a giant transportation and data center footprint.

In June, Amazon announced the launch of its Climate Pledge Fund, a $2 billion capital fund scheme that will invest in businesses across industries to help decrease the impact of climate change and support sustainable development.

Last year, Amazon also committed to becoming net carbon neutral by 2040 and to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from US vehicle design and manufacturing company, Rivian Automotive LLC.
