In a play on the humble supermarket ‘bag for life’, from today, 23 September, Aldi is offering customers the opportunity to win a ‘Swag For Life Jacket’ – a stylish waterproof bomber that transforms into a shopping bag.

It comes following new research by Aldi that revealed 74% of Brits think bags for life should be more stylish, while 66% of Gen Z say they would find a jacket that transforms into a reusable shopping bag useful.

Almost half of those polled (47%) admit to buying another reusable bag at least once a month after forgetting theirs, rising to 69% among Gen Z.

Additionally, nearly half of Brits (46%) say they regularly forget their shopping bags for the weekly shop, and 85% of Brits say they have a ‘bag of bags’ at home.

One in six respondents also admitted to hoarding more than 15 reusable carriers at home, while 47% said they have “cupboards full” of unused carriers.

While many people do indeed have cupboards stuffed with carrier bags, they can also be surprisingly loyal to their favourites, with 62% saying they have a reusable bag they always reach for - whether it’s because it’s sturdy (52%), they love the design (26%) or simply because it’s been by their side for years (18%).

Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, said: “Forgetting your bag for life is something we’ve all done, so our Swag For Life Jacket makes sure you’ll never be without one at the checkout again.

“It’s practical, reusable and perfectly timed for jacket season, making it the ideal shopping companion as we move into the colder months.”

More revelations from Aldi’s research showed shoppers in Yorkshire and Northern Ireland as those most likely to buy a new bag after forgetting theirs, with one in five (21%) revealing they buy a new bag at least once a week.

Meanwhile, Londoners are named the most likely group to specifically go back home after forgetting a bag, with 44% unwilling to add another bag to their collection.

The most bizarre things Brits have used to carry groceries in instead of a shopping bag include a cardboard box (16%), a bucket (6%), a picnic basket (5%), a pet carrier (3%) and a wheelbarrow (2%).

For a chance to win an exclusive and limited Swag for Life Jacket, shoppers simply need to email their full name to SwagForLife@aldi.co.uk, by 6 October 2026.
