Ajax FC’s new Bob Marley inspired Adidas third kit revealed

Amsterdam-based football club Ajax has today unveiled its Adidas third kit for the 2021/2022 season, in collaboration with Bravado, Universal Music Group’s merchandise division, and the Bob Marley family.

The kit is inspired by the late reggae legend Bob Marley and his ‘Three Little Birds’ song, which has been embraced and adopted as the Ajax fans anthem since 2008.

The story goes that when the Dutch team were playing in a pre-season friendly in Cardiff, against Cardiff City, they were asked to remain in the stands after the game, and were entertained by the stadium DJ who just happened to play the song. The fans started to sing along to it, and they’ve been singing it at every game since.

Cedella Marley, Bob Marley’s daughter, said: “I am beyond touched that Ajax has taken Three Little Birds and made it their anthem. Stories like this warm my heart and show how impactful songs like Three Little Birds can be. Soccer was everything to my father, and to use his words ‘football is freedom’.”

The black kit features Adidas’s iconic three stripes in red, yellow and green in acknowledgement of Marley’s rasta roots. Also, on the back of the jersey, just below the collar, it features a subtle reference to the iconic song, with three little birds sitting on Amsterdam’s Andreas crosses.

The kit will be worn in this season’s European matches, alongside Ajax’s home kit, and the shirt will no doubt become sought-after by fashion and football lovers alike.

The range also includes a track top, track pant, sweater, T-shirt and Adidas’s classic Samba football trainers, again with red, yellow and green stripes.

All products are available from today onwards on the Adidas website, on the Ajax football club online shop, in official Ajax fan stores and through selected retailers around the world.
