2017: the year of Gucci (and logos, slogans & sleeves)

With 100m fashion searches carried out by 80m shoppers in 120 countries carried out on Lyst, the global fashion search platform has a firm handle on the trends, designers and products that are most desired by today's fashion-conscious consumer.

Today it has unveiled the findings of its Year in Fashion report, which reveals by far the most dominant and influential brand in the market is Alessandro Michele's Gucci (pictured above). Its bold signature aesthetic and its Marmont accessories came out top in searches across multiple categories, while logos, slogans and statement sleeves also dominated as faced embraced politics, retro sportswear and the downright strange.

Gucci-ish In 2017 Lyst saw more than 17m searches for Gucci
Logos Logo pieces were among the most-wanted items for brands such as Gucci, Saint Laurent and Balenciaga, while retro sports brands Fila, Champion and Kappa made a huge comeback with searches up 460%
Woke fashion Searches for slogan (not including logo) t-shirts were up 105%
Jet leisure Searches for bright, holiday pieces from brands such as Mara Hoffman, Zimmerman and Dodo Bar Or starting trending in May and stayed high all summer
90s Cropped tops, chainmail, spaghetti straps and slip dresses dominated searches
70s Searches for flares, mustard, cords, pussy bows and glitter boots were up, while searches for sequins increased 42% between June to November
80s Yeezy, Off-White and the Kardashians brought back the cycling short with searches up 79%
Deconstructed Searches for this term peaked in July
Elevated Streetwear Cult items from Balenciaga, Off-White and Vetements were among the most wanted
Tailoring There was a 68% increase in searches for blazers with grey plaid being the most popular

Frayed hems Searches including the word “hem” were up 240%. RE/DONE, Mother and Vetements were the most wanted brands
Embroidered denim This trend peaked in spring with popular brands including Gucci and H&M, while the oversized embroidered denim jacket was a key style

Extreme sleeves on the SS17 catwalks

Extreme sleeves Sleeves replaced shoulders as 2017’s statement body zone with bell, puff, tulip, tie, balloon and extreme among the most popular styles
Lux socks The average spend on a pair of socks increased by 10% this year with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau being the most influential sock-wearer
Crazy denim Plastic, mud-splattered, inside-out, detachable legs, zip-up crotches, this was the year jeans became obscene
Fashion fruits Watermelon came out top but lemons, cherries, pineapples and pumpkins were also popular
Unicorns 1,000 unicorn-inspired fashion products were uploaded to Lyst this year
