Alexander McQueen biopic in development

21 January 2016

The late fashion designer Alexander McQueen is to be the subject of a new biopic directed by Oscar-nominated 45 Years director Andrew Haigh, reports Deadline.

McQueen, who was recently the subject of a West End play, starring Stephen Wight as the designer and Tracy-Ann Oberman as his muse Isabella Blow, is set to be immortalised in a film, produced by Damian Jones and Pathe.

Scriptwriter Chris Urch is understood to be writing the script which will in part be based on Andrew Wilson’s McQueen biography Blood Beneath The Skin. Producer Jones had previously optioned the book.

Work is understood to be planned to begin on the film at the end of the year. While details are still scant, the film is bound to generate significant interest both within and outside of fashion circles since Savage Beauty, an exhibition dedicated to the designer at the V&A was a sell-out success last year.

McQueen, widely accepted to be one of the great talents of his generation, took his own life in 2010 at the age of just 40. Isabella Blow, credited with discovering him, passed away in 2007 having also taken her own life.

McQueen was succeeded at the helm of his label by his right-hand woman Sarah Burton, who has won critical and commercial acclaim for her work. Her name was made when she designed the Duchess of Cambridge's wedding dress in 2011.
